School Pool Inspection & Ofsted-Aligned Testing

Schools, academies and independent schools that operate their own pools have a heightened safeguarding and premises-safety duty that interacts directly with slip-resistance compliance. We deliver UKAS-accredited pendulum and surface roughness testing aligned with Ofsted health-and-safety expectations and ISI inspection cycles, providing the documentary evidence inspectors and trustees expect to see.

Why school pools warrant elevated attention

  • Pupils are often less practised swimmers than adult users — falls are more frequent
  • Lifeguard cover may be less continuous than in commercial pools
  • Schools carry the safeguarding duty as well as the premises duty
  • Older school pool stock often has surrounds well past their original specified life
  • Insurance markets are increasingly demanding documented periodic compliance

Inspection alignment

Ofsted health-and-safety expectations and ISI inspection frameworks both reference premises safety. Although neither prescribes pendulum testing specifically, both expect evidence of risk-aware management. UKAS-accredited periodic pendulum and Rz data is among the strongest documentary evidence available for inspector and trustee review.

For independent schools subject to ISI's Standards Inspection cycle, the slip testing record sits alongside the wider premises-safety evidence reviewed during inspection.

Department for Education premises guidance

The DfE's Building Bulletin 103 and related guidance reference slip resistance for school flooring and aquatic facilities. Specifications for school pool surrounds typically call for PTV 40+ wet (using Slider 55 for the barefoot surround), with higher thresholds at steps and learner-pool zones.

Multi-academy trusts and estate-wide programmes

For multi-academy trusts running estates with multiple pools, structured periodic testing across the portfolio provides both insurance-grade evidence and an early-warning system for surrounds approaching end of life. Trust-level reporting consolidates findings across sites for board-level governance.

Holiday opening for testing

Pool testing is typically scheduled in school holidays to avoid disruption. We coordinate with site facilities teams and lifeguard rota constraints to test during half-term and longer breaks, with reports back in time for the start of term.
